Pipette calibration is the process of measuring and adjusting a pipette to accurately and consistently deliver a specified volume of liquid or gas. During a pipette calibration, technicians use traceable standards and a high-precision measuring instrument to identify and record the performance of the pipette. They adjust the pipette to conform to the most current laboratory standards to ensure that it is accurate and precise. The calibration often includes an accuracy assessment, an inspection of the mechanical components, and a performance test. Calibration is designed to meet local, national, and/or international standards such as ISO 8655 or ASTM E969.
